Hinch Small Batch Bourbon Cask Blended Irish Whiskey (700ml)

A blend of single malt and single grain whiskeys matured for 3 – 4 years in first fill bourbon casks adding hints of fruit, vanilla and caramel. Made in County Down, the name ‘Hinch’ is taken from ‘Ballynahinch’, (meaning town of the island in Gaelic). 43% Alc./Vol.

…Lemon drizzle cake, hazelnut, dried coconut strips, iced sweet rolls filled with jam and whipped cream, and a jab of ripe gooseberry are all on the nose of this blend of grain and single malt whiskeys. Its sweet and light-bodied, yet smooth and creamy, with lemon bonbons, vanilla, butterscotch, and hints of cooked fruits, with a spicy finish that retains a fruity juiciness. …Not too sure what this is, probably ‘a brand’. It’s done by a ‘Hinch Distillery Co.’ but this ought to be sourced. The modern whisky world. Colour: white wine. Nose: no proper Irishness that I can find, having said that it’s a rather malty blend, with cakes and breads plus the usual vanilla and soft acacia honey. Some popcorn, a few rose petals. Pleasant for sure, nothing to complain about this far. Mouth: the grains are having the upper hand this time, but we’re still fine despite all this ’empty-ish sweetness’. Caramel, office coffee, chicory, candyfloss, alcohol. We’re reminded of Havana Club. Finish: short and rather empty. Comments: a shame that the grain whiskies took over on the palate, the maltier nose was nice. 75 points – whiskyfun.com
